A Michigan motor vehicle bill of sale form is a document that outlines the specifics of a vehicle’s purchase and sale transaction between a private buyer and seller. When transferring the title and registration of a vehicle from one owner to another, the State of Michigan mandates the submission of a bill of sale, along with other necessary documents.

This form details essential information such as the purchase price, the condition of the vehicle, and any additional terms agreed upon by both parties involved.

Both the buyer and the seller are required to sign the vehicle bill of sale in Michigan.

An odometer disclosure statement (Form BDVR-108) must be attached to the bill of sale if the vehicle is newer than 2011, under 16,000 pounds, and self-propelled.

  Vehicle Registration

  New owners must register their vehicles within 15 days of acquisition at the Secretary of State (SOS) Office. If the vehicle is new to the state of Michigan, registrations must be completed immediately upon establishing residence.

  The registration must be renewed every 12 months and can be done up to six months in advance. Renewals can be completed online, at a self-service station, at a Secretary of State office, or by mail to:

  Where to Register Your Vehicle

  Registration can be done at a nearby Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) Office. If the vehicle was purchased from a private seller, it is recommended by the SOS that both the buyer and the private seller visit the office together to facilitate the transfer process.

  Documents Required by the DMV Office

  To register your motor vehicle, you need the following documents:

  • Bill of Sale
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form BVDR-108)
  • Original Certificate of Title (if lost or damaged, you can apply for a replacement by filling out an Application for Michigan Vehicle Title —Form TR-11L; you will also need this form if the vehicle is transferred from out of state)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Registration Fees
  • Proof of Insurance according to Michigan’s minimum requirements
    • $20,000 for personal injury protection
    • $40,000 per accident that results in deaths or injuries
    • $10,000 for property damage

    You will also need a motor vehicle power of attorney if someone else will represent the owner during the titling or registering process.
